The Fight for Fair Maps

Voting rights groups, including LWV of Florida, filed a lawsuit in the state court to stop Florida’s new congressional map.
The state court denied LWV FL’s motion to temporarily stop the maps from going into effect, but the League will continue to challenge Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ overtly partisan congressional map.

Nationwide Voting Rights Battles

LWV, LVW of Louisiana, the Louisiana State Conference of the NAACP, and the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice filed an emergency motion to block Governor Jeff Landry’s suspension of the Louisiana House primary election already underway.
LWV of Colorado filed a federal lawsuit against a CO law that allows one-party elections to fill state legislative vacancies in certain circumstances.
Maine became the most recent state to win a case against the DOJ in the data request cases. The court ruled against the Justice Department, finding that it failed to establish a sufficient legal basis for demanding the data.

Election Workers

LWV announced a partnership with the National Education Association (NEA) focusing on recruiting a new generation of poll workers for upcoming elections.

The League in Community

On May 14, League of Women Voters CEO Celina Stewart spoke at the 18th Annual Brown Forum for Women in the Law Conference at Northeastern University School of Law and spent time in community with women committed to justice, leadership, and public service.

In her remarks, she reflected on her own journey into this work – from growing up asking questions about fairness, belonging, and who gets to participate, to becoming a voting rights attorney and now leading the League of Women Voters.

She wrapped up with this: reach five people. Help them make a plan to vote. That’s how movements grow. That’s how democracy survives.
